Zombie Nation
Apparently we don't get enough sleep and this is turning us all into a nation of zombies, unable to innovate in the way the modern economy requires.
"There are two opposing interactions in the developed economies," he said. "First, extended work hours and increasing 24/7 behaviour is reducing the overall amount of sleep.
"Second,
with the demise of manufacturing an increasing dependence on our
ability to innovate and problem solve - the organisation of others.
These two trends are, unfortunately, on a collision course".
Only one slight problem. Work hours are not extending, they are contracting, as they have been for a century or more.

I think that working hours on average are decreasing, if you include unpaid domestic work, because of the contraction of unpaid domestic work by women. Paid work for both genders is increasing.
Tim adds: No, paid work for men is decreasing, paid work for women increasing and unpaid work for both decreasing, leading to on balance more leisure hours for both.

Someone's watched the opening to "Shawn of the Dead" one too many times.
