Wendie Ann Schweikert

There seems to be both remarkable stupidity and great good sense in the case of Wendie Ann Schweikert. A little odd to find both at the same time really.

Here's the original report on the case surrounding her:

A Laurens County schoolteacher was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct Friday after being accused of having sexual relations with an 11-year-old student.

Wendie Ann Schweikert, 36, of 1209 West Chapman Road in Laurens, was arrested after Laurens City Police officials determined that she had engaged in sexual acts with a male student at E.B. Morse Elementary School. Police said Schweikert had sexual relations, including intercourse, with the student on three separate occasions dating back to 2005.

OK, now that's gross stupidity. Seducing 11 year olds (call it what you will, statutory rape, paedophilia) really is not the most intelligent thing to do. However, when Ms. Schweikert came up for trial, she did something rather more sensible:

Wendie Ann Schweikert, a former elementary school teacher, pleaded guilty on Friday to having sex with an 11-year-old student and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, according to AP reports.

Schweikert, 37, was arrested in May 2006 and charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor and committing a lewd act on a minor.

Peace said that Schweikert was offered a plea deal that would have recommended 14 years in prison, but that she refused and decided to take her chances with the judge.

Not taking that plea bargain seems a great deal more sensible than what went before, that's for certain.

What was the prosecutor thinking, offering one with a sentence that high?

...including intercourse...

11 years old. Now, let me remember. How big was my Long Swift Sword at that stage? Hmmm - must have been fulfilling for our Wendie - well worth a 14 stretch.

So she was offered a 14-year stretch? About what you get for murder in Britain?
