Giuliani and Ferrets

Rudy Giuliani, who, we might remind ourselves, is running for President of the United States, rather flipped his lid on the subject of ferrets when he was hosting a radio show.

Quite what the connection between Giuliani and ferrets is you may well ask? When Mayor he had a weekly radio show and one day a caller rang in to ask why the city of New York did not allow ferrets to be kept as pets while State law clearly indicated that ferrets could in fact be kept as pets. Giuliani wasn't, to put it mildly, all that fascinated on the subject of ferrets, although I think we could call his reaction fascinating to a degree:

"There is something deranged about you.… The excessive concern you have for ferrets is something you should examine with a therapist.… There is something really, really very sad about you.… This excessive concern with little weasels is a sickness.… You should go consult a psychologist.… Your compulsion about—your excessive concern with it is a sign that there is something wrong in your personality.… You have a sickness, and I know it's hard for you to accept that.… You need help."

There's a photograph of the ferret fanciet himself here I think and Oliver Willis has the adio tape of Giuliani's anti-ferret fancier rant here.

The most distressing aspect is the description of ferrets as 'little' weasels - they are of course *big* weasels - namely polecats (although Pine Martens might count as the biggest kind of 'weasel').

Indeed even stoats are bigger than weasels.

So in fact there aren't any *little* weasels, weasels are the smallest weaselly kind of thing there is.

Now, what was that about being 'obsessed' with weasels...?

This is why we should not elect Giuliani. For every war that Bush starts, Giuliani would start about 4. If excessive concern for weasels is a sickness, I would be very, very sick...and here is a link to what weasels look like! Of course I would be concerned with that little teddy bear face! How do you get cuter than this?
