Günther Verheugen

I was wondering yesterday why I was getting so much interest yesterday from Google in this post about Petra Erler. Now I know, as today's Times tells me that that holiday Petra Erler and Gunther Verheugen took together last August included a visit to a nudist beach.

Europe's second-highest ranking commissioner was fighting to save his political career last night over pictures showing him naked on a beach with his chief of staff.

Günther Verheugen, who is married, is shown — wearing only a baseball cap — with his newly promoted aide, Petra Erler, on a nudist beach in Lithuania.

Bild announced that photos existed of that visit and also that they declined to print them. Apparently Focus magazine still might. I assume that all those people searching were looking for those photos. All I can think of is that there are some fairly sick puppies out there. Really, wanting to see these two in the nuddy?

One slightly trivial thing. I saw Google sending me all those people yesterday (that Petra Erler post was the most popular entry page yesterday, other than the main page) so I had a quick look around Google News and saw nothing. Mildly interesting that hits on a blog, the number of people using a search engine to look for a certain phrase or name, indicates that something is happening somewhere. Sort of an early warning system before it actually hits the English speaking press perhaps?

Apparently Guenter Verheugen is still pursuing his fling with Petra Erler, his "chef de cabinet". The German magazine "Bunte" has published two photos that show how Guenter enters Petra's flat after a long working day and the next morning she drives him with her car to his home...

According to his spokesperson GV's earlier statement that he did not have a relationship with her was still true. The spokesperson declined to comment on any parallels with Paul Wolfowitz.

Who said Eurocrats don't lie? How long will Guenter and Petra still be in office?

Private life of Verheugen not like Wolfowitz case: EU commission

Brussels (dpa) - The European Commission on Thursday said that the private life of Germany's embattled Commission Vice-President Guenter Verheugen was not comparable with the scandal over former World Bank chief Paul Wolfowitz.

German magazine Bunte Thursday published pictures of Verheugen and his female chief-of-staff that it said were taken last month.

Bunte said the pictures show Verheugen entering his chief aide's apartment in the evening and leaving it together with her on the way to work the next morning.

Asked by a reporter if the commission was still backing Verheugen in light of the recent Wolfowitz affair, a spokeswoman for the EU executive arm said that "the similarities that you are drawing are your responsibility and your responsibility alone, and I can only caution everybody to make this sort of amalgams."
