Times Watch

Err, might want to check this number lads?

Bondarchuk, who won an Oscar in 1968 for his version of War and Peace, shot 160 metres of film for the project, which was conceived as both a ten-part mini-series and a film.

It took them 14 months to shoot 30 or 40 seconds worth of film? And now that'll be the basis for a 7 part mini-series?

The Times is pretty sloppy about numbers, one article a while ago forgot the difference between Imperial and US gallons, another more recently stated that the Paras in Afghanistan had expended 4,500 rounds of ammunition in the 6 months they spent there, it was probably closer to 450,000.

Morningstar, given the reports of the underfunding of our soldiers 4,500 rounds was probably the right figure!

"The Times is pretty sloppy about numbers" ... so is the media in general. I believe it to be deliberate. The media wants to define what we believe and so is hostile to "strong" knowledge such as numbers and science, hence they are sloppy with numbers.

Some journalists are not so bright, but generally they are quite bright, so the innumeracy is probably deliberate.
