Von Richtofen

So some rich bird murders her parents, gets caught and jailed. OK.

A descendant of Manfred von Richthofen, the German pilot known as the Red Baron, has been sentenced to almost 40 years in jail in Brazil for bludgeoning her parents to death.

Suzane von Richtofen, the 22-year-old daughter of the great-nephew of the First World War ace, was described in court as "the personification of an evil blonde".

But the daughter of a great nephew is hardly a descendant now, is she? A nephew isn’t, a great nephew isn’t, so the daughter of one can’t be either.

Tsk. And you’d think that the Torygraph would get geneology right wouldn’t you?

Perhaps eccentricity runs in familes. Frieda von Richthofen, Manfred's sister, married Ernest Weekly, a languages professor at Nottingham University, and after bearing three children in the marriage, met and eloped with the writer DH Lawrence:

I love it when the papers say "direct descendant". Is there another sort?

You'd think that the Worstall would get genealogy right, wouldn't you?
