Metric Football
Is something going on?
GERMAN riot police charged crowds of football supporters in the centre of Cologne last night at the end of England’s match against Sweden.
Police with batons drawn moved in to thwart what appeared to be an attempt by German football hooligans to attack English fans in the central Café Alter Markt.
There had been tensions throughout the day between groups of supporters, many of whom had been drinking all day. Tens of thousands of Germans took to the streets to celebrate their team’s earlier 3-0 victory over Ecuador. An estimated 60,000 England supporters were in the city and many without tickets watched England’s match in clubs and on outdoor screens.
People do seem to be taking this metric football fairly seriously, don’t they? Given the recent performance of the real football team in Australia I can sympathise.

Compared to rugby or cricket, your actual soccer is indeed a pale thing. But it does provide endless drama: Thingy United sack Ron Knee and appoint Fuckmouth McTosh, Wee Michael Owen falls in a heap and can't play any more, Potato Head gets a sore toe and can't play for weeks, etc, etc. Like a Soap Opera, really.

Andannuvafing: why are their tactics so unimaginative? Consider the problem of the free-kick near goal, where the defensive wall is positioned by the ref and then always manages to sneak forward again. Why doesn't the attacking team have two players lie on their backs, as an extension of the wall, so that the ref has no choice but to notice and penalise the forward shuffle? I call this my "prone centre-forward plan": it would particularly suit the beanpole whom England field at the moment.
