Blog Birthday

Today is this blog’s second birthday. Happeee Birthday to me!

Looks like it’s just possible that it might have acheived something. An Army of Davids moment perhaps?

I started out expecting to be the next Instapundit....2,000 visits a day after two years: yeah, right.

What has happened is that I was blogging huge great long pieces when I started. This rather morphed into my trying to actually sell pieces to people with money. You know, editors. Some success at this, places like TCS Daily, The Times (and here), The Independent,  book reviews for The Telegraph, I got translated into Hebrew (??), did an anthology of British blogging, was asked to do paid blogging for the Adam Smith Institute blog, similarly for the Social Affairs Unit, (and here), an old friend from Russia read the blog and offered me this paid blogging gig, talking about Simon Baron-Cohen’s ideas on male and female brain types, empathy and systemizing, I’ve done keyword articles (I know, I know)....

The net result of all of this is that I’m actually making a living as a writer. No, I’m not getting rich and I haven’t given up the day job as the master of the international scandium oligopoly. But each month this year I’ve been invoicing between $3,000 and $4,000 purely on the writing. As I live in a pretty cheap country this is indeed a living.

This has led to some not all that original thoughts on how blogging can be used, especially in the UK. We tend not to (although things are changing) have journalism degrees, entry into the craft is via a 2 year apprenticeship on a local or regional paper. The other route was to do unpaid internships (which explains why the middle classes colonise the magazine world) for 6 months to a year in the hope of getting taken onto the staff or picking up the contacts to get freelance work. It would appear that blogging, for those actually interested in it (and I know that 95% of bloggers aren’t) can be a route into getting proper paid work. Well, if writing is in fact real work. And why not? It’s worked for me and appears to be working for Chicken Yoghurt as well.

A short note to any editors out there: yes, I am available at reasonable rates. I’m finding that I love to do book reviews just if that’s of interest.

But the major lesson I’ve learned over the past two years? Unless you are exceedingly lucky or talented (I’m obviously neither) I’m not sure that it is possible to make a living from blogging. It is however, as the above should illustrate, entirely possible to make a living out of having blogged.

On to the third year and perhaps I’ll finally get that sitemeter to tick over a million visits.

It's Tim Worstall's blog's second birthday, so many happy returns. It made me wonder what his first post was (Tim Worstall April 13th 2004), and then I thought i'd look through a few other blogs for their own inaugural posts: [Read More]

Happy birthday, Tim.

Thanks for the mention - I am indeed testament to the fact that you can earn pin money in your pants.

Congratulations Tim. It makes me smile to think that El Gordo has not been able to get his grubby mitts on any of your hard earned cash, which makes it all the sweeter.

Happy Birthday Tim, if that is indeed the phrase. Happy to do any left-over book reviews. You know - scraps, etc.

Happy birthday to the blog! 3 years is a long time to do anything, but I'm young, it's all relative.

Good luck with the writing, just don't forget your roots(!)
