Rape and Murder in New Orleans.

I think this is about as close as anyone is going to get to an apology or clarification from the NY Times about their reports from New Orleans. Second hand reports, misidentifications and rumour, all reported as fact. I’m not sure that anyone else or any other system woudl have done it differently but just another example of the point that you shouldn’t always believe what you read in the papers.

On Wednesday, however, Dr. Louis Cataldie, the state's medical incident commander for Hurricane Katrina victims, said that only six or seven deaths appear to have been the result of homicides.

Whether that number holds or not we’ll find out later but just to give some idea that’s about the normal number for a fortnight in New Orleans (the city alone, not including the surrounding area).

Comments

So if the number of homicides per week remained the same we can assume that the number of homicidal people remained the same. Given that a fair proportion of the population of New Orleans did actually evacuate can we assume that the evacuees were more likely to be law abiding citizens? If this is so, then it can be extrapolated that a large part of the criminal population of New Orleans remained behind.

If this is the case then surely GWB's "inaction" actually served the community at large by rendering distress to the criminally minded.

Alright, it's junk science on an NYT scale. But sometimes it's fun to tease liberals, especially by using their own methods.

Back in the naughty corner for Remittance Man?
