A Planning Triumph!

We should be (and are, of course) so grateful to those who run the NHS. They do such a good job of it. As you may or may not be aware there has been an expansion in the number of doctors being trained, through university and medical schools and onto the first rung of the subsequent on the job training.

Dr Daley is one of a number of young doctors who have been caught out by a mismatch between the increased number of doctors coming up through the system and the number of SHO training posts available, as well as a change in the training structure.

However, someone has forgotten to increase the number of more senior training posts, so people cannot progress through the system, going on to become fully trained specialists.

Oh, well done lads! What wonderful planning! Because, of course, as we know, having the system run from the centre, having it planned by the wise and beneficient is so much more efficient isn’t it?

Got the same problem with student teachers up here in Scotland. We've a double lot of students to get into the normal number of placements because they chopped six months off the 4.5 year course to get more students into teaching...AND then told local authorities to sort things not the university/schools which had always worked before. Result: local authorities totally screwed it up and even now a few weeks before my group start their final placement there are loads of the group without placements...I'm alright - I sorted my own direct with the local High School months ago but now they won't let the others do the same so they are all stuck waiting anxiously.

God, this makes me feel old. I was told as a lad that Government manpower planning never works: "look at the medics".

Well these unemployed medics can simply ask to be paid less money by hospitals for their time.

That is unless there's some sort of nation wide scheme rationing treatment with pay-bands etc...
