Hoping to be an Author.

If you were hoping to become (as, of course, I am in common with 80% of all bloggers) a published author you might want to stop and think for a moment. Read this. It has to be the most fiscally insane industry on the planet.

Personally it was 18 hours a day, 7 days a week for five months, followed by a month or so of proofing and re-writes, followed by an eight month wait for publication, followed by joy and delight, followed by (nearly three years later) no money beyond the meagre advance. And most people don't get an advance...

I later got one of the publishers drunk. About 99% of authors never see any royalties - they work it out very carefully so that pretty much the entire print run has to be sold before anyone other than the publisher and retailers get any cash. Next time I did one (the advance was OK) I didn't, shall we say, take it too seriously.

It's not all it's cracked up to be, no.
