Gorgeous George Galloway.

Nick Cohen fairly lays the boot into Gorgeous George Galloway. Strikes a chord with the crowd at Harry’s Place anyway, as does another piece in the Times.

In 1935, in London's East End, Sir Oswald Mosley, a former Labour MP and moustachioed loudmouth, addressed members of the British Union of Fascists, the cult he had founded to worship his personality. 'The yelling mob of socialists and communists are paid by the Jews,' he yelled at his mob. 'The big Jew finances and controls the old parties, both Conservative and socialists; the little Jew sweats you in the sweatshop.'
....

In 2005, in London's East End, George Galloway, a former Labour MP and moustachioed loudmouth, is urging supporters of Respect to propel him back to power. Just as Mosley bent the knee to the fascist leaders of his day, so Galloway bent the knee to Saddam Hussein when he flew to Baghdad and burbled: 'Sir, I salute your courage, strength and indefatigability.'

I will admit to being slightly surprised at something from Harry’s commentary:

"Is Galloway embarassed at sharing an agenda on such issues that not even the most right-wing Tory candidate would admit to holding?

'I have religious beliefs and try to live by them,' Galloway tells me. 'I have all my life been against abortion and against euthanasia - in fact, on Question Time two weeks ago I was the only panellist to inveigh against the creeping euthanasia in our society. I am not surprised if my position on these issues strikes a chord.' "

I realise that I’m regarded as more right wing than the Tory party (and on matters economic probably am) but have little to do with or interest in the social conservatives. However, it’s entirely possible to be against both abortion and euthanasia for religious or humanist reasons without being right wing, a Jew-baiter, a mustachioed loudmouth or a panderer to fascists. I’m just slightly surprised that Harry lumps such views together. He’s always struck me as having more subtle views than that.

I was actually referring to the Muslim Galloway voter who argued that sex education was wrong and that homosexuality "is not natural".

I'd be interested to find a Tory candidate openly taking such a position on homosexuality today.

Or have I underestimated the changes over the past 15 years?

I meant 'overestimated' in that final sentence.
