Terri Schiavo

The Terri Schiavo case continues in the US with Congress passing a special law so that it can be heard in Federal rather than State courts. My, unimportant, personal opinion is that the feeding tube should not be withdrawn for two reasons. One, I’m against euthanasia, the very practice of deciding what is a life worth living, and two, dehydration, taking two weeks, just doesn’t strike me as a pleasant thing to do to someone.

The case seems to be making everyone reverse long held positions (or is it politicians abandoning principles for a sound bite. Now that would be a surprise, eh?), for we have Republicans demanding the over riding of State’s rights and Democrats insisting upon limitations in the power of the Federal Government and judiciary. No, no stunning conclusion, just noting an oddity.

A feeding tube des not keep someone alive, it just helps maintain comfort. Thus removing the tube incurs a death slower/nastier than those receiving state murder in the USA.
It is cruel and unusual punishent.
The woman has not been adequately assessed - the husband refuses the obvious test of MRI. Apparently he only found he could read her mind about her preferences after he had shacked up with the mother of his two young children. The award for care of Terri is missing.
And libertarians are more interested in their principles of freedom than Terri's distress.
A sorry mess.
