Boris on Prescott.
Boris Johnson is good today on the lunacy of John Prescott’s approach to housing.
It is a policy that defies logic. It is not as though Labour believes we have too many houses in this country. On the contrary, this same Prescott recently announced that, as a nation, we were so short of houses that it would be necessary, over the next 20 years, to construct another 640,000 in the South-East, with 200,000 going on greenfield sites. The policy is philistine, expensive and environmentally disastrous.
On the one hand,
semi-sacred northern terraces are to be flattened, when it would be
cheaper and more sensible to renovate them in a way that many potential
residents might like. And, with the other hand, Prescott waves the
green flag to the developers who want to turn the South-East into a
great homogeneous mass of roundabouts, multiplexes, out-of-town
shopping centres and ribbon development.
.....
The question is whether it is really the business of government to skew
the market on this colossal scale, and whether Prescott is right to
encourage this Stalinist resettlement of populations, from north to
south.
I’ve written variously here before about how insanely stupid the plans are. Tens of thousands of houses will be built on flood plains, where they cannot get insurance and thus no mortgages, hundreds of thousands of perfectly good houses will be demolished, all at the dictat of one buffoon. If we were (and it is under discussion) to move back to the UK those Northern Terraces are exactly where we would go, logically spending our money on two or three to knock together rather than a rabbit hutch down South.
I feel it is time for a google bombing. Who will join me in pushing fuckwit up the rankings? Remember not to make the link more than twice in one posting as the ’bots tend to ignore those that link excessively. We might even be able to get there, to the top, in time for the election.

Johnson's argument is somewhat undermined that the local community has voted overwhelmingly in favour of the scheme to demolish houses in the area. More here:

Also, I thought you were against restrictions on housing development in the South-East? Yet here you are cheering on Boris when he complains about Prescott "concreting over" the Garden of England with 200,000 homes built on greenfield land (a statistic he seems to have completely made up). Shurely shome mishtake?

Fuckwit Prescott is of the command and control brigade. He wants it, he is important and so it will happen regardless. What property owners do with their own houses is their affair. What the State does is a different matter all together.

EU Serf,
One definition of "fuckwit" is "someone who shoots his mouth off on something he knows nothing about". By saying that 400,000 houses will be demolished "regardless" because Prescott wants it to happen, you're fitting that definition. Try reading up on the subject - this isn't Prescott's decision, and local communities are being consulted on the demolition plans. In the South, there's a massive pent-up need for housing which the Government is doing it's best to meet while people like Boris Johnson and apparently now Tim Worstall wail unconvincingly about the environment. So it's not a case of 'command and control' at all.

Jim, you may be right, but Prescott's still a fuckwit :-)

Building on flood plains is stupid. Every winter in my area, blocs of stupid people who have built on flood plains are flooded out of their homes. They get a big payout from FEMA (US disaster relief agency) and then rebuild their houses in exactly the same flood-prone place. All taxpayers must pay for the stupidity of a few homeowners. Does the UK government have a similar program to FEMA?
Tim adds: No, thank the lord, we’ve been spared that little piece of idiocy.

In time for the election? He's #1 for fuckwit already. We just have to keep him there. Maybe we can get Blair in at #2.

I'll second the nomination as Blair in fuckwit position #2. He's obviously taken lessons from fuckwit #1 re: Iraq. But when all is said and done, aren't ALL politicians fuckwits?
