SOCIAL SECURITY
This is a very strange phishing attempt. It looks like they are trying to get your social security information.
Now, as far as I know, you don't have an online account which you need to update in order to get your Social Security payments. So I think what they're doing is trying to get enough information so that they can clone your ID.
But this is definitely a phishing attempt. The solution is simple. Never, ever, click through teh links in emails that ask you to register with a site. Always close the email, go to the browser window and then go directly to what you know is the correct site.
SOCIAL SECURITY
Social Security Announces 3.3 Percent Benefit Increase for 2007
Monthly Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits for more than 53 million Americans will increase 3.3 percent in 2007, the Social Security Administration announced today.
Social Security and
Supplemental Security Income benefits increase automatically each year
based on the rise in the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers
(CPI-W), from the third quarter of the prior year to the corresponding
period of the current year. This year's increase in the CPI-W was 3.3
percent.
The 3.3 percent Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA)
will begin with benefits that nearly 49 million Social Security
beneficiaries receive in January 2007. Increased payments to more than
7 million Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries will begin on
December 29.
Some other changes that take effect in January of
each year are based on the increase in average wages. Based on that
increase, the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security
tax (taxable maximum) will increase to $97,500 from $94,200. Of the
estimated 163 million workers who will pay Social Security taxes in
2007, about 11 million will pay higher taxes as a result of the
increase in the taxable maximum in 2007.
NOTE: We now
need you to update your personal information. If this is not completed
by November 11, 2006, we will be forced to suspend your account
indefinitely

Wachovia Bank
Here's a phishing attempt.
These sorts of emails are designed to get you to log into your account. But, instead of logging into your real ccount, as you think you are doing, you're logging into a fake site.
The criminals then get your log in details and can thus empty your account.
These come in many shapes and forms, from banks, credit card companies, even Yahoo and E Bay.
Of course, the emails are never really from those companies, but from the criminals.
They way to deal with them is to never, never, click through or log into your account from an email. Always open a new browser window and log into the page you know is the real one.
One other way to tell that it is a fraud, a phishing attempt, is that your real bank will address you by your name. The fake ones just say 'Dear Sir'.
Dear Customers, We require you to update
your account information. Failure to update your account information
could result in your account being placed into a restricted status.
Restricted accounts continue to receive payments, but are limited in
their ability to send or withdraw funds. Please update your Account
information as soon as possible.
WACHOVIA is
constantly working towards the security of all of it's online banking
users. To ensure the integrity of our online banking system, we
periodically and randomly review accounts.
Once you have updated your account records, your Wachovia account service will not be interrupted and will continue as normal.
To update your records click on the following link:

We offer you a new convenient and safe high-quality level of service to handle you ATM card.
