Now here's a retailer doing something interesting with the net. Instead of simply using it to try and pull in hte customers, to serve as a lower cost method of reaching people, they're actually building up a knowledge base that potential customers can use. Here it is, from Acuvue  at aclens.com.

I think this is a great way to boost traffic and custom. Once the information is up there and people are able to read and link to it then of course this will simply increase the visibility of the whole site. Further, they're showing to potential customers that they have more than just an interest in selling them something: they're consultant for them, rather than just salesmen.

Now, whether that is actually true or not isn't the point, it's the perceptions of those potential customers that matters.

Another thing that aclens.com offers is that, as a source of unbiased information, it puts more power into the hands of the consumers. Instead of everything being filtered through the eye doctors (who have their own incentives to suggest this or that treatment) it allows people to see both the positives and negatives of any specific scourse of treatment or method of sight correction.

An excellent initiative and one that I', sure will lead to a great increase in their business.
