Fernley, Nevada,
Fernley, Nevada seems to be underwater as I write. A storm system coming in dumped so much rain on the area that a 30 ft section of a levee broke and allowed a canal to flood the place.
A levee break near Fernley, NV, caused flooded homes and evacuations after a storm system over Southern California and Nevada brought heavy rain and snow to the area. A countywide emergency declaration has been made for Lyon County after the Truckee Canal broke early Saturday.
Hmm, there's something nagging at the back of my mind about this:
FERNLEY, Nev. -- A canal ruptured early Saturday after heavy rainfall, pouring 3 feet of near-freezing water into about 800 homes and stranding about 3,500 people, authorities said. A 30-foot-long section of the Truckee Canal broke shortly before 5 a.m. in the desert agricultural town east of Reno, officials said. No injuries were reported.
Now what is it, scratching away....
The break prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood warning for north central Lyon County in western Nevada until 10:15 a.m. PST.
About 3 feet of water filled about 800 homes in the town near Reno but nobody was hurt.
About
3,500 residents of the desert community are stranded but school buses
have been brought in to take them to a shelter. Two helicopters from
nearby Fallon Naval Air Station also are helping
make rescues.
Hmmm?
FERNLEY, Nev. (AP) - A canal breach early Saturday pouring 3 feet of freezing water into about 800 homes and trapped about 3,500 people, authorities said. A 30-foot wide section of the Truckee Canal broke shortly before 5 a.m., sending a wave of water rushing into the desert town on the eastern side of the Sierra near Reno, officials said.
That's it! Last time there was a break in a levee the entire City of New Orleans went down and the reaction was chaotic. This all seems to have gone off very well, efficiently, no injuries and so on.
So one very cynical question: just what colour are the residents of Fernley, Nevada? And a less cynical one....is it because the emergency services are all local who know what they're doing, rather than coming from FEMA?

Well there is a bit of a difference in staging a response effort to 3,500 people as opposed to 350,000 +.
Hopefully some of the lessons learned from New Orleans will come into play with the recovery of the homes. If the homes can be dried out while temperatures are relatively cool, they might not suffer the wide spread mold damage.

Most of the residents in rural Nevada are white. Nevada is the fastest growing state in the United States.
One of the problems in Nevada is caused by the gaming and entertainment industries. They openly employ a large number of illegal aliens in low income jobs. A federal crackdown is needed.

I live in Fernley - the majority of the residents are white - however, we are a small tight-knit community where everyone is like family. Everyone pitches in to help!

That darned weather -- always discriminating against black people -- a full blown hurricane in New Orleans, and only a snowstorm in Fernley. Can you imagine?
Perhaps the EEOC should do something about this!
AL Sharpton and Jesse Jackson should protest!
Certainly a Federal Commission of Inquiry!
