Sunny Hundal on Liberalism
Hmm.
To be socially liberal, in my view, is to be more mindful of compassion and empathy for others.
Me, I'd call that being human. Being liberal is to agree with JS Mill: freedom and liberty are the things policy should encourage, to the point that people should have as much of both as they can manage without actually popping. As Sunny seems not to understand the very basis of liberalism the rest of his piece rather fails.

It's such a shame that this 'liberal' compassion and empathy so often mmanifests itself as authoritarian intolerance for what others think and want to do.

In what way is state-slavery and extortion compatible with empathy or compassion?

Even within his own terms he's wrong. He should have said "To be socially liberal is to make public claims of being mindful of compassion and empathy for others".

Sunny Hundal is one of the decent Left but he still suffers from the same delusion that only the Left care about people; that only the Left 'do' compassion.
Those of us committed to free trade, private ownership of capital and small govt, don't do so out of a desire to get rich quick, but because we appreciate that this is the only proven way of helping the world's poor improve their standard of living.
I don't dislike charity because i don't give a toss about poverty. I dislike charity precisely because it perpetuates poverty.

I say socially liberal Timmy, there's a reason for that:
