Unlock Your iPhone

The iPhone has only been on sale for a few hours and already there are people scouring the internet looking for a way to unlock an iPhone.

There are rumours that in India some grey market dealers claim to be able to unlock an iPhone for about $25. That does leave you with the problem of precisely how to get your iPhone to and from India, of course.

Further, even if you do get it unlocked, there's no guarantee that it'll actually work, or at least that the more advanced features will, anywhere except on AT&T's network.

As to activate the iPhone you've got to use iTunes, in fact, I can't see how unlocking it will provide any benefit at all.

Those who know better are entirely at liberty to correct me here, of course: but I think you're stuck with AT&T as your service provider.

In the first place the darn thing should cost less than 50 U.S. dollars. It's just a scheme to obtain a huge profit. If the phone was really so great, it would have much more universal access.

Of course it can be unlocked. AT and T have a cancellation clause after 30 days, you can cancel your contract with AT and T for 175.00. At this point they would have to unlock the phone. Since AT and T can unlock it so can anyone else.

Of course the Visual Voice Mail will not work, I cannot see anything else that would not work. I suspect all voice mail vendors are looking at putting a Web Services interface into their voice mail systems, so within a year, most voice mail systems will work with the iPhone with no need to integrate the same way AT and T have done.

I'm only studying in the u.s. so it would really help if i get it unlocked, cause now i am back home with my iphone over the summer and its no different than an ipod! so i'll be always looking for a way to unlock it, and i dont really believe that apple doesn't want people to unlock it, otherwise, people wont buy as much iphones as apple wants..

i think apple is fooling AT&T, because there is no way that apple doesn't want their Iphone to be sold rapidly, while poor AT&T still believe that there is no way for it to be unlocked with their Itunes activation procedure.
