From this news item, it looks as though obits for blogging are altogether very premature, at least for the other side of the Atlantic:

I long for those happy days back in 2002 when I'd have to explain to my friends what a blog was when they asked what the hell I did all day on the computer.
Nowadays I'm like one of those bitter music fans who boast about following a band before they got big and it all became about the money.

Bollux. The girls he talks about as a type have been blogging for longer than most of us, and are more committed to it as well.
Livejournal is 70%+ female, and was one of the first blogging platforms around. Might not, for the most part, be 'serious' blogging, but it is blogging.
Teenage girls aren't new to blogging, they're where it all started. And a lot of them have kept with it over the last 8 years.
No prizes for guessing why I've kept my journal going even though I've now also got a few 'proper' blogs.
