Warren Buffett

This rather changes my opinion of Warren Buffett:

THE world’s second-wealthiest man, Warren Buffett, will give away the bulk of his $44 billion (£24 billion) fortune in an extraordinary charity deal with Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft.
...
Starting this month, Mr Buffett will begin to transfer stock in Hathaway to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the world’s largest philanthropic organisation. It funds the international fight against diseases such as malaria, Aids and tuberculosis.

He’s said for years that he would give away his fortune after his death. But to a family controlled foundation, like the Hewletts, Packards, Fords and Kennedys. Given the vagaries of US tax law these perpetuate rather than dinimish the value of inherited wealth. One point, for example, is that all investments are free of death duty, income (dividends and interest) and capital gains taxes at the expense of the foundation donating 5% per year of assets. Such donations can (and in a remakable surprise, often do) include paying family members to manage said assets and give away the money.

Putting the dosh into the Gates Foundation is a very different kettle of fish. I assume that the other $7 billion will go into such a family foundation but still.

Considered the most successful investor of all time, Mr Buffett lives a famously unpretentious life. He still lives in the $31,000 (£17,000) house he brought in Nebraska in 1958.

Buffett made one enormous financial discovery. Yes, he’s a good investor, certainly, and that explains some of his success. But there have been many with a similar eye for an under rated financial asset (Jimmy Goldsmith, Hanson and White, etc). What made him tens of billions rather than the odd billion or two was leverage.

He realised that insurance companies have a large float, premiums received that have not yet been spent on claims. These are, in all such companies, invested to produce higher profits. But if you are a good investor, access to that float can give you huge leverage. Instead of putting $1 million (say) into a stock, why not put $1 million into buying an insurance company and then use the float to put $10 million into a stock? What would you rather have? 10% on your $1 million or 10% on $10 million?

Which is pretty much what he did. Sounds simple explained that way doesn’t it?

Update: From Fortune, the original story. Yes, the family do get a chunk of the money:

The other foundation gifts that Buffett is making will also occur annually and start in July. At Berkshire's current price, the combined 2006 total of these gifts will be $315 million. The contributions will go to foundations headed by Buffett's three children, Susan, Howard, and Peter, and to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation.

You seem to have killed trackbacks so here's a manual one. Interesting that he insists that BillG remain involved as a condition for getting to spend his dosh

Tim adds: Trackbacks should still be there although I have to approve them. Way too much spam recently.

He already gave away a billion when he ignored his own advice and listened to the economists and went short the $

Could it be that he has looked at the mess Congress has made of the "death tax," and become uncertain of the potential cost of dying?

The garden however now extends to cover most of the original suburd and includes the world's largest personal golf course, a complete amusement park and several small european principalities purchased by Mr Buffett and moved en masse to Nebraska :-)

I have a small hospice foundation and I am
employed at the Eger Health Care Center on Staten
Island, New York. It is so hard to raise dollars.
I am presently working on development of the first
free standing hospice on Staten Island and I am
falling short. All of the approvals are in and we
still need an additional 1.2million. If you could
guide me on how I could apply for funds through
Mr. Buffet we would be so thankful. I know about
filing on line and I did write the Gates my
request doesn't comply with their mission. With
the amount of money allocated for research some should take a serious look at people that need hospice services and give them the opportunity to
leave us with dignity. My heart cries out to anyone that can help. We need to care for the people that grow old together but can't take care of their needed spouse. Remember, not everyone has
children or living realtives let us be their for
them and let hospice help them through their journey. We are born to die help me "Celebrate Life". Mr. Buffet is you are reading this please
respond.

Sincerely,
Vienna Profeta

leave us and try to fit hospice care within their
guidlines.

Good day Mr Buffett. I'd like to make an suggestion. You already made your billions and there are thousand upon thousands of people who would love to get some idee on making some money for themselves. Why don't you release some useful information for next to nothing to people who can tell you their live story or something, maybe they can even win something from you like a book or even money. People love telling their story. I can sure tell you some interesting things from my life!

I can even beg you for money, but I don't suppose you'll even listen. But here goes nothing. I need financial help. Not much, just about 10 000 dollars to get out of trouble.

Let's leave it there. I hope you enjoy your life and please think about my suggestion.

Thanks

Dear Mr. Warren Buffett,
Hello. My name is Anna Bogdanov and I go to Alice Buffett Middle School. I would like to wish you a Happy Labor Day and also congratulate you on your recent marriage. I play tennis for the USTA and am doing a training group called the CTC. I have been training a lot these days I really want to achieve something in my life with tennis. I love the sport and want to keep playing but the only problem is, is that my family and I don't have the money to support the sport. My parents are giving away their last penny for me to be able to keep playing. They have done so much for me this past summer and they have to work really hard so that I can be happy. I was just wondering if you could donate some money so that I can keep playing. I think I can be really good if I could just have the chance to practice. We were looking on the web and found an academy located down in Kansas. It costs approximately $2,500 a month. If this is at any possible please e-mail me back at rushansweety101@yahoo.com
Thank You for your time.
Sincerely,
Anna M. Bogdanov
