Margaret Beckett Research and Administration Trust.

Guido has an interesting little piece. It appears that Margaret Beckett had her own little blind trust a few years back. Into which donors could deposit money to aid and help her "political activities" without them actually having to be declared.

Intersting in the light of her letter of Friday  suggesting that Cameron should tell all about the Tory Party donors, don’t you think?

Guido has of course written to her asking whether what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

A good backgrounder on the whole blind trust situation from David Osler. And this from 1998 in Hansard:

Mr. Redwood: To ask the President of the Board of Trade if she has now closed the Margaret Beckett Research and Administration Trust. [52335]

Mrs. Beckett: Yes.

And as far as Google is concerned, that’s all there is on the subject. Would be interesting to know who and how much though, woldn’t it?

Tricky to have your judgement swayed by a donation when you don't know who the donation is coming from (because it's been given anonymously). But then they're devilish bright, these Labour types. And the fact that she closed the trust eight years ago - a mere two years before it was made illegal! - just makes matters worse. She's obviously trying to cover things up!

You could have written a rather interesting piece about blind funding of political parties. People should be allowed to support causes they believe in, but equally politicians shouldn't be for sale: so just have blind bank accounts. Then, even if some short bloke turns up and says "Oi, I gave you a million quid, now what about that advertising ban on F1" you would have no way at all of knowing whether he was telling the truth.

But they weren't really blind were they, everybody and their mother knew who gave the money.

She has made an official statement that is a model of openness - not.
