Eco-friendly Flip-Flops
The Guardian set up a spoof site (ecofriendlyflipflops.co.uk) to test how easy/difficult it was to game Google. Advertising eco-friendly flip-flops (No CO2 generated!) they tried a few of the legitimate methods and a few slightly on the dodgier side in order to get the result up the rankings.
The result is here.
It is a slightly unfair thing to claim a triumph over as the use (or not) of the hyphens changes the results and so while there were indeed 11,000 results as they say, there’s probably very few indeed with exactly that combination of keystrokes.
This post, is, of course, simply a test to see whether a simple post, with no special activities, will be enough to get a decent position in the results for eco-friendly flip-flops. We’ll no doubt find out once the spider has been round in a few days.

Thanks Tim.
As I pointed out in the Guardian's Technology Blog, I don't want to claim a triumph - I just wanted to see what happened. And I specifically chose such a limited to test in order to be able to track movement in a niche query over a short period.
But it will be interesting to see what happens...

Whats the point in using a niche term? As you dont need to do any SEO to get it to rank!
