Seriously? I'd heard of stamp tax but I never realised that it quite literally referred to putting a stamp on stuff.
Maybe they should bring it back for for the sale of alcopops so chavs can help subsidise the Royal Mail.

Such a stamp is to be distinguished from a postage stamp, which is not a duty but a simple method of paying the government for a service rendered.
In the UK it was quite common for low value transactions to actually have a postage stamp affixed...GPO being State owned and all that.
